Graphic Organizer Unit

Objectives:

§The learner will apply the connotation and denotation of a word.

§The learner will use the Inspiration software program.

§The learner will derive meaning and associations for this word with context clues.

§The learner will create original sentences to showcase his/her understanding of the new word.

§The learner will use other students' displays to improve his/her vocabulary.

Materials needed:

§Paper/pencil

§Computer, word processing program, and Inspiration

Length of time:4 class days--30 minutes days 1-2; 1 hour days 3-4

Day 1

Introduce new vocabulary words as "mystery words"

Each student will draw a number and be assigned a word.

Copy vocabulary list.Choose a number to get word.

Day 2

Model a vocabulary word web for whole class.

Participate in large group word web.

Day 3

Have computers with Inspiration available for all students during the day today.
Create vocabulary web using Inspiration.Print it out.

Day 4

Have students create 3 good sentences using their word in context--one that begins with a subordinate clause, one that begins with an introductory prepositional phrase, and a compound sentence.
Write sentences that use word in context.Print out sentences and display with word web.Visit the displays of classmates to learn information about other words.

Notes:This activity would be ideal in a classroom with 4 or 5 computers.However, it could be managed with one or by using a lab setting.In a lab, all students would have access to a computer to produce their individual word webs and access to a printer for their final copy of their web and their sentences.
