Reading Unit

Objectives:

Materials needed:
Length of time:30-45 minutes a day for 9 class days.90 minutes for Vocabulary Parade


 

Procedure:

Day 1
Read the book aloud to the whole class
Listen to the book being read aloud and write down interesting words
Day 2-3
Divide the class into small groups and have them find the words in italics to make the class vocabulary list.Then divide the list into 5 parts--one for each group.
Work in a small group and reread the book to make a list of the vocabulary words
Days 4-5
Set aside time during the week for students to work at the computer to type their group's list.
Using computer and MS Word, type words from your group's list in large type to post on word wall.
Days 6-7
Provide drawing paper and art supplies for students to illustrate a word from the book and define it.
Choose a word from the book and draw it plus add the definition on the page.
Day 8
Give oral vocabulary test on words from the book.
Write the correct spelling and definition of the words from the book on a test.
Day 9
Help individual students choose a word to dress up as in the Vocabulary Parade.
Choose a word that they would like to dress as for the Vocabulary Parade.

Notes:This activity would be ideal in a classroom with 4 or 5 computers.However, it could be managed with one or by using a lab setting.In a lab, all students could be responsible for typing one word for the word wall.
